Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum

This summer, the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum has free admission! This is the time to get in and see wonderful works by Umlauf himself and Farrah Fawcett. Yes, Farrah was a staunch advocate of the arts!

The Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum is small but wonderful. There are various works of art which have been skillfully crafted. While not all of them may be your style, you’re sure to find at least one that is breath taking or will make you stop and think.

This past summer, I had decided to go on a random visit there. I was already in downtown Austin and just finished my TEFL Program. I was ready to celebrate. What better way than going to a sculpture garden?

Yeah… not the most exciting, but I loved it.

Getting there took a bit with all the traffic. It was the pinnacle of our summer heat. Everyone was heading down to the river and lake to cool off. People were biking, getting ice cream, or out enjoying the sun.

After changing in the car into some cooler clothes, I got out my hat and camera. The garden was offering one of their free admission promotions. Sometimes during the summer, or certain times of the year, they’ll have free admission on certain days to draw more children in and expand their horizons in the art department. It’s a good way to get business later on.

The garden isn’t very big, but it’s nice and quiet. The main exhibitionist’s art was Umlauf himself and Farrah Faucet. Yes, the even the lovely Faucet had a fascination with sculptures. She was one of his favorite students and models. He did several pieces on her, and they continued to exchange letters and have a close friendship all their life.

Some of the sculptures will make you question who could come up with such a thing, but there are others which make you see the calmness and beauty in simple things of life.

While the sculpture garden is small, it’s worth a visit to see some good artwork. What’s even better is you’re already in downtown Austin, so you can hit up South Congress or one of the amazing pizza joints!
